Dear Members,

On behalf of the Chairman Sri R.Lakshminarayana Rao and the members of the Executive Committee of IETE Bangalore Centre, I have great pleasure in presenting the Annual Report for the year 2008-2009.

The detailed financial status of the Centre is given in the Audited Statement of Accounts, Balance sheet and Auditors Report included in the Annual Report.

Library:
During the year 45 books worth Rs.15,000/- were added to the library .
Shri.K.Giridhar,FIETE has donated four Technical Books to the Library.

TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES:

03rd July 2008: IETE APEX Forum on “Satellite Based Multimedia Delivery: Future Trends” was held at IETE Bangalore Centre. Lt.Gen.Ashok Agarwal PVSM (Retd) Vice President & Chairman Industrial Co-ordination Committee welcomed the dignitaries & the participants. Shri.P.N.Chopra,DIG,BSF (Retd) Vice president & Chairman Technical Programme Committee spoke about the overview of the theme. Sri. S.Narayana, President IETE, delivered the Presidential address. Prof.B.S.Sonde Distinguished Fellow & Past President, IETE was the Chief Guest and addressed the Forum about the importance of the Theme. He suggested that the proceedings of the APEX FORUM should be published & circulated widely, especially to the various Universities for the benefit of the student’s community.

The panelists were Dr.Surendra Pal, Dy.Director ISRO Satellite Centre, Dr.R.K.Mehrotra,Head Rural Technology Mission, Tata Teleservices, Sri.D.Venugopal Chief Technical Officer, Advance Satellite Tech & Services & A.K.Bhatnagar Chief Engineer ( R & D), AIR & DD presented papers on the development taking place in the field. There was a good interactive session with the Participants.

Lt.Gen.D.P.Sehgal, PVSM,AVSM,VSM (Retd) immediate Past President summed up the deliberation/Proceedings.

The APEX FORUM was well attended by Senior Fellow Members, delegates from Public Sector units & Pvt Sectors All India Radio & Doordarshan. . The whole proceedings were telecast by Local Doordarshan.

10th July 2008: Prof.K.Srinivasan memorial lecture and ITI Endowment Lecture were delivered by Dr.S.Christopher, Director, Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), DRDO, Bangalore on “Indigenous Active Array Antenna for Indian AEW & C (AirBorne Early Warning & Control)”.

19th July 2008: Course on :MODEREN RADARS for BEL Executives was held at IETE Bangalore Centre. The faculty for the course were from LRDE, Bangalore Co-ordinated by Sri.D.Rajagopal.

16th & 17th Aug 08: Office bearers of IETE Bangalore Centre Executive Committee attended the first interactive meeting of office bearers of IETE Local & Sub Centres at HQ IETE,New Delhi.

04-06th Sept 2008: IEEE International Seminar on Measurements & Control in Robotics 2008 (ISMCR-08) organised by IEEE Bangalore Section and Co-sponsored by IETE Bangalore Centre was held.

13th Sept 2008: Students of DIPIETE & AMIETE Bangalore Centre visited ISRO Tracking facility of Indian Deep Space Network located at Bylalu arranged by Upgraha Amateur Radio Club. This is one of the important infrastructure to support the chandrayana mission.

15th Sept 2008: Engineers Day celebration was Jointly organized with IEEE Bangalore Section & IET Bangalore Network. Dr.Surendra Pal, DFIETE, Distinguished Scientist ISRO delivered the Engineers Day Lecture.

22nd IETE Bimal Bose Award was presented to Prof.K.Gopakumar, Centre for Electronics Design and Technology (CEDT) IISc, Bangalore for distinguished contribution in the area of Power Electronics and drives for high power applications”. Dr.Surendra Pal presented the award.

Prof.K.Gopakumar delivered a talk on “ Multilevel inverter topologies and applications”

Short Term Courses on Embedded System Designs using Micro-controllers, DSP Processors, VLSI Design & VHDL & FPGA Design have started.

18th Oct 2008: A Technical Lecture by Sri.N.Balasubramanian ( 14th IETE-Flt Lt Tanmaya Singh Dandas Memorial Awardee), Head Integration Avionics ARDC,HAL Bangalore, spoke On “UTILITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM”: A CONCEPT IN LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) .

19th Oct 2008: A Short Term Course on Embedded System Designs using Micro-Controllers (Fully Practical Oriented) a month long course concluded. 35 participants from BEL, CAIR & Engineering Colleges attended.

02 Nov 2008: 2nd IETE Foundation Day was celebrated. Prof.B.S.Sonde past President IETE was the Chief guest. Founder Members viz Prof.B.S.Sonde, Sri.T.V.Srirangan, Brig.K.Balasubramaniam,Sri.Narendranth & Prof.J.Paramashivan were felicitated.

The Message from Lt Gen Ashok Agarwal, PVSM (Retd) President IETE on the theme:ICT for Common Man was read during the Foundation Day.

Dr.M.H.Kori, Sri.H.Ramakrishna and Prof.B.S.Sonde, spoke on the Theme ICT for Common Man.

During the Foundation Day the AMIETE & DIPIETE passed students were also felicitated by Prof.B.S.Sonde.

03-06 Dec 2008: IEEE –International Symposium on Microwaves –2008 (ISM-08) was held at NIMHANS Convention Centre Bangalore in association with IETE Bangalore Centre

03 Dec 2008: MICROWAVE School was organised as part of the Pre Symposium Tutorials for the benefit of the students and young professionals. The subjects covered were:-Introduction to Microwaves, Microwaves Devices & Circuits, Microwaves in wireless Communication, S Band and X Band Transmit/Receive Modules (Lecture-Demo) Advances in Microwave Measurements (Lecture Demo) & Modern Antenna Measurements (Lecture Demo).

04 Dec 2008: Tutorials ( I ) RF Front-end Chip Design for Wireless Communication by Dr. Mohammed Madihian, Director NEC,USA.
( ii ) Software Defined Radios : “Design Architecture & Efficient Transmitters” by Dr.Fadhel Ghannaouchi ,Canada”.

05 & 06th Dec 2008: Microwave Symposium was inaugurated by Sri V.V.R .Sastry CMD,BEL.101 papers were presented during Symposium. About 200 delegates attended.

An exhibition of Microwave and related products was held and about 30 stalls of National & International firms were participated.

10th Dec2008: A Technical talk on ”Power Quality survey and Research” by Sri A.D. Thirumoorthy, Executive Engineer, TNEB Coimbatore was delivered at IETE Bangalore Centre. This was organised jointly by IET Bangalore Network and IEEE Power & Energy Society, Bangalore.

AMIETE & DIPIETE examinations were held from 15th Dec to 22nd Dec 08 followed by Lab Practice examinations.

9th Jan 2009: National Seminar on: ”Next Generation Wirless Technologies” conducted by Aeronautical Society of India. Bangalore Branch.Prof.C.Murali,IETE Council Member and Sri.R.A.Bhagavan, Hony.Secretary IETE Bangalore Centre attended the Seminar .Dr.M H.Kori, EC Member IETE Bangalore Centre deliverd a talk on Wi Max Overview & Architecture Sri.H.Ramakrishna Vice-Chairman, IETE Bangalore Centre chaired the session on “Software defined & Cognitive Radios”.

07th Feb 2009: 13th IETE-Prof.S.N.Mitra Memorial Award Lecture was delivered by Sri.Ram Mohan Mishra, (Awardee) ,ISRO on “Data Transmitters for IRS Satellites” . He was assisted by Sri.Prateek Bansal Scientist ISRO.

28th Feb 2009: 13th - Sir C.V.Raman Memorial Lecture on “Scientific Instruments in Chandrayan” was delivered by Dr.T.K.Alex, Director, ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC) Bangalore. Lt.Gen.Ashok Agarwal, PVSM (Retd) President, delivered the presidential address and introduced the speaker. Sri.P.N.Chopra, Chairman Technical Programme Committee delivered the welcome address and Sri.R.Lakshminarayana Rao Chairman, IETE Bangalore Centre Proposed the vote of thanks.

This programme was telecast by Local & National Doordarshan Channels. The media have also covered this programme and the Deccan Herald News Paper published the Report . This programme was well attended.

4th April 2009: One day workshop on “ARM EMBEDDED Systems” was held. Sri GR Joshi was the Convenor of the workshop. Ms. Geetha, Engineer, of Embedded Systems solution Pvt. Ltd was one of the speaker and demonstrated the ARM KIT. The ARM products were displayed. 50 delegates participated.

12th April 2009: Summer School in Electronics (SUSIE-09) was inaugurated by AVM AS Murthy. Shri D.Rajagopal, FIETE, Convenor of the one month long course explained the course curriculum to the students. Parents were also present during inauguration function.

08th May 2009: Students of Summer School in Electronics (SUSIE-09) visited ISRO satellite Centre Bangalore.

11th May2009: Demonstration of AERO Modeling and Amateur Radio (HAM) for students of SUSIE-2009.

17th May2009: World Telecommunication and Information Society Day; Prof SVC Aiya Memorial lecture and Valedictory of Summer School in Electronics for School children were held.

Sri Shankar Raju Technical Director, National Information Centre (NIC) spoke on the Theme “Protecting Children in Cyber Space”.

Sri H Ramakrishna Vice Chairman read the messages of ITU Secretary General and UN Secretary General. He also spoke about Prof. SVC Aiya and introduced the speaker.

An Electronics Project Exhibition were held on 16th & 17th May 2009 by Summer School Children. About 30 projects were displayed.

Sri D.Rajagopal Convener of SUSIE-09 read the report of Summer School held from 12th April 09 to 17th May 09.

Certificates and Prizes were distributed. Sri R.Lakshminarayana Rao, Chairman, IETE Bangalore Centre delivered the Presidential address.

Wg Cdr HR Parthasarathy Proposed the Vote of Thanks. The above activities were telecast by Doordarshan channel.

28th June 2009: AGM

Guidance classes for the following subjects were conducted for the Dec 08 and June 09 Examinations.

AMIETE
1. Mathematics I & II
2. Signals and Systems
3. System Software
4. Numerical Analysis
5. Engineering Graphics.

DIPIETE:
1.Mathematics I & II
2.Engineering Drawing.
Total 164 students attended.

The faculty for these subjects were Sri.J.Parmashivan, Sri.Narayanaswamy, Sri.Mohan Kumar, Sri.Shaffiur Rahaman, Smt.Shakuntala, Sri.Arvind Kumar.. Practical Training classes for AMIETE (ET) (CS) and DIPIETE (ET), (CS) were held.

Laboratory practices, Project & Seminar examinations for AMIETE (ET), CS IT & DIPIETE (ET) & CS were conducted under the able supervision of Prof.C.Murali, Prof.S.Jagannathan,Prof.P.R.Muralidhar, Smt.A.Indira, Sri.Mohan Kumar, Prof.Udaya Kumar and Prof.Manjunatha . In all candidates appeared for the practical project examinations in Dec 2008 & Feb 2009. Guidance for Project in Electronics were given to students of AMIETE & DIPIETE (ET).

21 March 2009: All Karantaka students paper contest was held There were 36 students contested from, AMIETE,ISF’s and various Engineering Colleges 16 papers presented during the contest Dr.K.N.Shankara, Past Director ISRO Satellite Centre Bangalore was the Chief guest and delivered the Key note address on Communication Trends”. Dr.M.H.Kori spoke on the Wireless Technology & Future Trends.

This contest was organised by Prof.S.Jagannathan as Chairman & Smt.A Indra as vice Chirman. The Judges for the contest were Sri.A M Bhagwat, Sri.Udayashankar, Prof.P.R.Muralidhar, Dr.M.H.Kori. Three Best papers were awarded.

IETE Bangalore Contre’s Library facilities were upgraded with computerization.for the benefit of students. Ms.N.Rashmi AMIETE passed student has done this computersation of Library.

15th to 22nd June 2009: AMIETE & DIPIETE examinations were conducted at IETE Bangalore Centre under the able supervision of Sri.D.Rajagopal Superintendent of Examination. There were total 4200 candidates appeared for Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Science & Information Technology. In one of the days there were 662 candidates appeared and we have hired adjacent Kalyan Mantapa to accommodate about additional 250 candidates for first 4 days of the Examination.

The High lights of the conducting the examination this year are CCTV and public address systems were used. The seating plans with colour schemes for Electronics, Computer Science and IT were hosted in the Bangalore website ieteblr.org in advance to facilitate the students to know their exam halls without any confusion /difficulty.

The comments from the students are well organised.

Additional Activities:

New Syllabi
The revised Syllabi of AMIETE (ET),(CS),(IT) & DIPIETE (ET) & CS Co-Ordinated by Prof.C.Murali Chairman ADEC with the help of syllabi review committee has been completed and approved by the Council. This new syllabi has been effective from June 2009 examinations.

The Council has approved and sanctioned Rs.12 Lakhs, for provision of a lift and Air Conditioning/external vehicle noise insulation in the 2nd Floor IRSI-Hall of IETE Bangalore Centre. Infrastructure Committee constituted a Sub-Committee for scrutinizing the proposal/estimates/ Quotations received for Lift and associated works. The Sub Committee headed by AVM A.S.Murthy (Retd) as Chairman, Sri.D.Rajagopal, Wg.Cdr.H.R.Parthasarathy & Sri.R.A.Bhagavan as members. The Installation of Air Conditioners have been completed except for the Noise insulation. The Quotations received for LIFT have been scrutinized and M/S KONE Elevators has been awarded the contract at a cost of Rs. 8.5 lakhs.

The Civil works is expected to start shortly.

Opening of 56th IETE Centre at Shimoga. Lt.Gen Ashok Agarwal, PVSM (Retd) President IETE inaugurated the IETE sub Centre at Shimoga, on 01 Mar 09. Sri. R.K.Gupta Chairman MLCC & Sri.Babu Rao Vice President & Zonal Co-Ordinator were present. Office bearers and some Members of Executive committee of IETE Bangalore Centre were also present during the occasion.

ISF Activities:

29th Aug 2008: Prof.C.Murali, Council Member, IETE inaugurated the IETE Students Forum at RNS Institute of Technology, Bangalore and delivered a talk on :4G-An Overview . Wg.Cdr.H R Parthasarathy (Retd) Hon.Treasurer IETE Bangalore Centre spoke about IETE and ISF for the benefit of the students and Faculty. 300 students have enrolled for ISF.

30th Aug 2008: Dr.M.H.Kori, past Chairman, IETE Bangalore Centre inaugurated the ISF at SJC Institute of Technology, Chikkaballapur, Bangalore and delivered the Talk on “Wireless Technology” Sri.R.A.Bhagavan, Hon.Secretary IETE Bangalore Centre spoke about IETE and ISF, 360 students have enrolled for the ISF.

ISF-Activity: 55 ISF Students of SJ (Govt) Polytechnic Bangalore visited Doordashan Kendra on 24th Sept 08.
Prof.C.Murali delivered an invited talk on “4G-An Overview’ at the Zonal Seminar on Communications Information Technologies (CIT-2008) at Tirupati on 09th Sep 08.

04th Feb 2009: ISF SJ (Govt) Polytechnic Bangalore arranged a lecture on “Mobile Communication” by Sri. Ganapathi Hebbar, FIETE.

14th Feb 09: ATRIA Institute of Technology Bangalore conducted a Seminar on Communication Technology. IETE Bangalore Centre EC Members Viz Dr.M.H.Kori,Sri.H.Ramakrishna, Wg.Cdr.H.R.Parthasarathy (Retd) delivered the lecture on Future Trends in Communication Technology, Software defined Radios & Microwaves respectively.

19th to 21st Feb 2009: Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology Bangalore conducted a Seminar on “Recent Trends in Wireless & Wired Communications”. Sri.R.A.Bhagavan, Hony.Secretary, IETE Bangalore Centre gave a talk on Quality Assurance of Electronics Components & Equipments”.

07March 2009: Prof.C.Murali delivered a talk on 4G Overview at SJCIT, Chikkaballapura.

15th April 2009: Prof.C.Murali Council Member IETE inaugurated the ISF at NITTE Meenakshi Insitute of Technology (NMIT), Bangalore and delivered the keynote address on overview of 4G.

09th May 2009: Shri.R.Lakshminarayana Rao, Chairman, IETE Bangalore Centre was the Chief guest at the valedictory function of ISF at SJCIT Chikkaballapur and delivered a talk on “Digital Broad Casting “

Staff:
Sri.K R Sridhara Murthy, FIETE, Smt.Rajeshwari Shankar, Senior Adm.Asst. Sri, Harshavardhan part time accountant, Sri.Guptha Lab incharge, Sri.Dinesh Technical Assistant, Smt Geetha & Smt.Sarojamma Safaiwala continued to serve the Centre. The student chapter members helped the Centre in various activities without remunerations.

The staff worked as dedicated team to achieve the defined goals and never failed the committee, true to expectations, placed with confidence.

Acknowledgement:
It is near to impossible to acknowledge the contributions of various organizations and Senior Members towards the growth of the Centre. Naming some of them to this august body gives me immense satisfaction. BEL, CRL, BSNL, LRDE, CAIR, ISRO, HAL, DDK, IISc., ADA & ADE continued the support. Other professional bodies like IEEE Bangalore Section & IET Bangalore Network supported in the joint activities conducted by IETE Bangalore Centre. Prof.R.P.Shenoy,Prof.B.S.Sonde, Sri.G.Madhavan, Sri.S.Vardarajan, Sri.Mahalingam, Prof.A.Kumar,Wg.Cdr.C.P.K.Menon,Dr.Surendra Pal, Dr.K.Alex AVM A.S.Murthy, Dr.M H Kori, Sri.A.Bhaskaranarayana, ,Sri.H.Ramakrishna Prof.C.Murali Sri.G.R.Joshi,Dr.D.C.Pande, Prof.Jagannathan, Sri.D.Rajagopal, Sri.A.B.Srinivasan, Prof.P.R.Muralidhar, Sri.Mahadevan, Sri.Gnyana Sundar, Sri.A.M.Bhagwat & Smt.Indra. continued to guide & help in all possible manners. The Committee is indebted to all those who contributed even though, some names might have been in-advertently missed.
